Hastelloy B-2

Hastelloy B-2 Nickel Molybdenum Alloy

Hastelloy® B-2

UNS N10665 | W.Nr. 2.4617 | Alloy B-2

Hastelloy B-2 is a solid solution strengthened, nickel-molybdenum alloy. It is engineered specifically for significant resistance to reducing environments like hydrogen chloride gas, and sulfuric, acetic, and phosphoric acids. It is the premier choice for handling pure hydrochloric acid (HCl).

  • Common Forms: Plate, Sheet, Bar, Pipe, Fittings.
  • Key Feature: Resistant to Hydrochloric Acid at all concentrations and temperatures.
  • Limitation: Poor corrosion resistance in oxidizing environments.
  • Structure: Low carbon and silicon to prevent grain-boundary precipitation.
Why Choose Hastelloy B-2?

If your process involves pure Hydrochloric Acid (HCl), Hastelloy B-2 is the superior choice. Unlike the C-series alloys, B-2 relies on a high Molybdenum content (~28%) to withstand aggressive reducing acids. It effectively resists the formation of grain-boundary carbide precipitates in the weld heat-affected zone, making it suitable for use in the as-welded condition.

⚠️ Critical Technical Warning Hastelloy B-2 has poor corrosion resistance to oxidizing environments. It is NOT recommended for use in media containing ferric salts, cupric salts, or wet chlorine, as these can cause rapid, catastrophic failure.

Hydrochloric Acid Specialist

Excellent resistance to HCl gas and acid at all concentrations and temperatures, a capability matched by very few metals (like Tantalum).

Reducing Environments

Superior performance in pure sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and phosphoric acid where oxidizing contaminants are absent.

SCC Resistance

Like other high-nickel alloys, it offers excellent resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC).

Chemical Composition (%)
Element Content (%)
Nickel (Ni) 65.0 min (Balance)
Molybdenum (Mo) 26.0 - 30.0
Iron (Fe) 2.0 max
Chromium (Cr) 1.0 max
Manganese (Mn) 1.0 max
Carbon (C) 0.02 max

*Note: The extremely high Molybdenum content drives its reducing acid resistance.
