Welding Electrodes

Nickel Alloy Welding Electrodes (SMAW)

When field repairs, drafts, or restricted access make shielding gas impractical, coated stick electrodes are the ultimate solution for joining superalloys. 28Nickel supplies premium flux-coated nickel alloy welding electrodes engineered for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Formulated to strict AWS A5.11 standards, our electrodes deliver excellent out-of-position weldability, easy slag removal, and X-ray quality joints in heavy chemical, marine, and power generation construction.

AWS Classifications & Base Alloy Matching

Selecting the correct AWS coated electrode is critical for achieving the necessary tensile strength and corrosion resistance, especially in heavy-wall pipe welding and dissimilar metal joints.

Engineering Advantages of Coated Electrodes

Our flux-coated electrodes are specifically formulated to provide superior arc stability and welder appeal, even in challenging field environments.

Field & Draft Ready

Unlike TIG or MIG welding which rely on external shielding gas that can be easily blown away by the wind, SMAW electrodes generate their own protective shielding from the flux coating. This makes them indispensable for outdoor construction and offshore rig repairs.

All-Position Welding

Formulated with fast-freezing slag, our smaller diameter electrodes (3/32" and 1/8") excel in out-of-position welding, including vertical-up (3G/5G) and overhead (4G/6G) pipe joints where maneuverability is restricted.

Superior Slag Control

The specialized flux chemistry ensures a smooth, stable arc with minimal spatter. Upon cooling, the slag is easily removed (often self-peeling), revealing a clean, brilliant weld bead with excellent tie-in at the toes, reducing post-weld grinding time.

The Dissimilar Welding Champion

Grades like ENiCrMo-3 (Inconel 112 type) and ENiCrFe-3 (Inconel 182 type) are the industry standard for joining vastly different metals—such as stainless steel to carbon steel or superalloys to low-alloy steels—without the risk of weld cracking.

Standard Specifications & Packaging
Specification Category Details & Standards
Global Standards AWS A5.11 / ASME SFA-5.11 (Nickel and Nickel-Alloy Welding Electrodes for Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
Standard Diameters 3/32" (2.4mm), 1/8" (3.2mm), 5/32" (4.0mm), 3/16" (4.8mm).
Standard Lengths Typically 12" (300mm) for 3/32" dia, and 14" (350mm) for larger diameters.
Hermetic Packaging (Crucial) Electrodes are baked to remove moisture and packed in hermetically sealed metal cans (typically 10 lbs or 4.54 kg per can). This prevents flux moisture absorption and completely eliminates the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) on the job site.
